When looking at a roofing solution for your home, you would want to know what exactly it consists of, and be assured that it’ll stand the test of time. At Tilcor, we use ZINCALUME® steel in all of our roofing systems, a highly durable material which allows complete traceability for the ultimate assurance of quality.

In this blog, we’re going to look at the benefits ZINCALUME® steel has over galvanized steel, and why it’s a product that’s going to go the distance for your home.

ZINCALUME® steel offers both durability and a great modern or traditional aesthetic. ZINCALUME® combines the corrosion protection of aluminium with the sacrificial protection of zinc, giving it the full advantage of both metals.

ZINCALUME® is composed of:

  • 55% aluminium
  • 43.4% zinc
  • 1.6% silicon

Our steel is coated in a protective layer of zinc to prevent it from corroding and rusting. The zinc works as a sacrificial anode so that even if the coating is scratched, the exposed steel will still be protected from the elements by the zinc.

THE KEY BENEFITS OF ZINCALUME® INCLUDE:

  • Good corrosion resistance at high temperatures
  • Good abrasion resistance due to the hardness of its surface
  • Excellent thermal and light reflectivity
  • ZINCALUME® has a significantly longer service life than a galvanised steel product

ZINCALUME® vs. Galvanized Steel

ZINCALUME® has a significantly longer service life than a galvanised steel product that uses only zinc. In fact, various corrosion tests have shown that the surface corrosion resistance of ZINCALUME® is almost twice as good as Galfan. This is due to the higher proportion of aluminium in the coating - a material which reduces its reactivity (Galfan only has 5% aluminium).

Galvanization only applies a protective zinc coating to steel. Although galvanizing will slow the attack on the underlying steel, rusting will be inevitable after some decades of exposure to weather. For example, corrugated iron roofing will start to degrade within a few years despite the protective action of the zinc coating.

OUR ZINCALUME® IS 100% NEW ZEALAND SOURCED
